xylene dimethylbenzene

xylene dimethylbenzene
A commercial mixture of the three isomers, ortho-, meta-, and para-xylene. The last two predominate. Used as protective coatings; solvent for alkyd resins, lacquers, rubber cements; synthesis of organic chemicals. An aromatic compound having the formula C6H4(CH3)2. Xylene is a major component of gasoline. A mixture of toluene and xylene if frequently used as automotive paint thinner. The flash points of these isomers range °from 81 to 115°F. Para xylene, with a flash point of 81°F, is used to calibrate flash point testers. The explosive limits of xylene are 1.0% to 7.0%.
